Sandwich Infant School

Where everyone is valued and learning is fun

At Sandwich Infant School, we know the important of fluent handwriting to enable our children to become confident writers with legible, age expected writing.  Children need to be taught to correctly form letters of the correct and orientation, so our handwriting lessons build upon this year on year.

In Reception we begin with pre-cursive handwriting so that children become familiar with the correct formations of letters. As the children move into Year 1, they learn to write cursive, developing to joined handwriting in Year 2.  Delaying teaching joined handwriting gives teachers and children time to focus on other aspects of the writing process, such as composition, spelling and forming letters correctly.

We understand that repeated practice is necessary to go beyond accuracy to fluency in letter formation and therefore prioritise this on our timetables with discrete daily handwriting lessons.
