Guidance on Infection Control in Schools

NHS - When Should My Child Return to School?

Infant-aged children are often exposed to coughs, colds, and other mild illnesses more frequently as they begin school, simply because it may be their first time regularly mixing with larger groups of peers. This exposure is a normal part of building a strong immune system, and most children adapt over time. At Sandwich Infant School, we place a strong emphasis on hygiene and illness prevention, including regular handwashing routines, teaching children proper coughing and sneezing etiquette, and maintaining clean, well-ventilated learning spaces. These practices help reduce the spread of germs and support a healthier environment for all.

Children can usually attend school with minor illnesses like a cough, cold, or runny nose, as long as they don't have a high temperature and are otherwise well. However, they should stay home if they have a high temperature, vomiting, or diarrhea until they are well and the fever has subsided, and they have been symptom-free for at least 24 hours for fever or 48 hours for vomiting and diarrhea. Some contagious illnesses have specific exclusion periods, such as measles and German measles, and it's important to follow specific guidance for each.

Please refer to the documents below for further support and guidance on whether your child is able to attend school. The NHS web site is also a useful tool for advice.

Please telephone or email the school on the first day of absence and keep us informed of your child's progress if the illness is extended.
